Katherine (1st June)

Hello again
we have had a good couple of weeks since leaving Darwin and the Oasis Caravan park, starting off we went to the Pandanus park near Lichfield National park and based ourselves for 5 days while exploring the NP, jock stayed with the van while we went to the NP highlights, first day was a good walk along the river and taking in Buley Rock hole for a swim and the walk to Florence Falls.

the second day was a look at the Termite mounds and a couple of walks in the Bush along side the river.

the third was just kicking back and enjoying the company of new friends we met at the park, having a few drinks and the usual story swapping, on the 4 day we went to the Tolmer Falls and Wangi Falls we did try to get to the lost city but the track was closed.

After spend a lovely time in the Lichfield Np it was time to head of towards Katherine, along the way south we pulled into a little free camp along side another creek and water fall called Robin Falls just out of Adelaide River, it was so nice we decided to stay 3 days and just relax.

We didnt want to leave this little camp spot, but there was still so much to see and do with Katherine further south we packed up and said our farewells to all the neighbours and on the road again, we were going straight to Katherine but decided to pull into Hayes Creek road house which had a park out the back, a nice little park with some interesting walks, we were both getting over a flu we picked up so decided to rest up there for a few days.

we went for a walk into the Butterfly Gorge and couldn’t believe our eyes, there must have been thousands of butterfly’s just hanging around this little Gorge, i think it is a breading ground for them, with the butterfly’s came the spiders some of the biggest i have ever seen the size of my hand.

After a couple of days we were feeling much better and on to Katherine where some friends from Darwin had booked us into the Boab Caravan park in Katherine, after settling in and saying our hello’s to Tony, Liz, Ton and Bev we set up and had our first McDonald’s for a very long time 🙂 the next day was a shop and restock for our trip to Alice Springs as we will be free camping most of the time going down the centre.
We went to the Katherine Gorge for a 4 klm walk and i decided to surprise Robyn with booking a helicopter ride over the Gorge.

Looks like we have missed you in Katherine. We were there Saturday and Sunday nights, did the 2 gorge boat cruise on Sunday for the first time since 1982. We spent last night at the Heartbreak Hotel at Cape Crawford, and today arrived in Borroloola after spending the morning wandering around the amazing sandstone spires in Caranbirini Reserve. Not as many as the Bungle Bungles, but much more colourful. Beautiful! Are you heading out this way, or going straight down the highway?

  5. robyn congerton

No worries. We are now in Cloncurry! Safe travels to you, too. Enjoy the Red Centre – it’s a fabulous place. And you’ll enjoy a bit of cold weather again Robyn. Will let you know when we are heading back over the Strait, and hopefully catch up with you back on the little island.
