Omeo (6th Oct)

The first days drive was to Omeo up the Alpine road, about 90 klm north of Bruthen, we had great weather and the drive was very scenic following the Tambo all the way to Omeo.

Omeo was established by Gold fever, the town is the highest gold field town in Australia, with a population of 452, with plenty of snow in winter through to spring its name was derived from the Aboriginal word for mountains or hills, the town was also used by stockman to push cattle through the region in 1835, and in 1845 gold was found and peeked in the 1860’s. Now mainly exists for tourism.
